Children’s Writer-in-Residence Placement

APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN

As part of Love to Read Local Month 2025, we’re thrilled to introduce a brand-new Children’s Writer-in-Residence placement in partnership with the KSP Writers’ Centre, thanks to support from the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund.

This opportunity is open to published WA-based children’s authors—emerging or established—offering a dedicated one-week residency during the July school holidays.

The selected writer will receive:

  • $3,000 stipend.
  • One-week stay at KSP Writers’ Centre in the beautiful Perth hills, from 14-20 July 2025 (meals not included).

Writing WA is looking for a writer who demonstrates a clear vision for contributing to the Love to Read Local Month campaign by promoting literacy, creating an essay, and participating in various promotional activities. A collaborative mindset, enthusiasm for public engagement, and dedication to fostering a love of reading in young audiences will be key to selection.

Residency obligations include:

  • Serving as an ambassador for Love to Read Local Month 2025, championing Western Australian literature and promoting literacy for junior readers.
  • Conducting a workshop at the KSP Writers’ Centre during the residency period. This session should be designed to engage and inspire junior readers by fostering a love of reading and/or the joy of creative storytelling in a fun and interactive way.
  • Writing a 750–1,500-word original essay on the theme ‘Why I Love to Read Local’ for publication in the little journal, issue #3, 2025. (If required, further instructions or details regarding this theme will be negotiated/discussed with the successful applicant).
  • Participating in promotional activities, including photo shoots and social media engagement as requested, to support the Love to Read Local message.
  • Engaging with the literary community at KSP Writers’ Centre, making use of available resources and opportunities.

This is a fantastic chance to focus on your craft, engage with young readers, and celebrate WA stories. Applications are now open—see below to download the application form.
